Trust in Automated Systems
The Jian, Bisantz & Drury checklist: 12 items capturing trust and distrust in an automated or AI system.
Score many respondents at once
Use one row per respondent and one column per item (Q1…Q12), with raw responses from 1 to 7. An optional first column called id labels each row. Comma, semicolon and tab separated files all work.

When to use it
AI assistants, recommendation engines, autopilots, decision-support tools: anywhere over- or under-trust matters.
How it is scored
- Items 1–5 measure distrust and are reversed (8 − response) for the overall score.
- Overall trust is the mean of all 12 items after reversal (1–7, higher means more trust).
- Trust and distrust means are also reported separately, using raw responses.
Subscales
- Trust (items 6–12) · items 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
- Distrust (items 1–5) · items 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Reverse-scored items
1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Participants are not told which items are reversed.
